Plant of the month May

Lilly pilly - Syzygium

If you want to attract native wildlife to your garden, this is the plant for you! Lilly pilly is versatile and hardy, and with so many varieties it is a great choice for most gardens. This fast growing native plant is characterised by spectacular thick foliage with a glossy sheen. It is ideal for use as garden hedges which produce a marvellous display of highly fragrant white flowers in summer and the wildlife love it! The Lilly pilly fruit is edible; it has a tart, cranberry-like flavour that has a hint of cloves and has been a popular bush food since the early 1980’s. The fruit is most commonly used to make jam, sauces and syrups.
