Plant of the Month October - Hardenbergia

This month I would like to introduce you to the Native Australian Hardenbergia. This evergreen climber is a great choice to run up a wall or fence. It’s beautiful spikes of vibrant colour are also perfect to grace your garden trellis or arbour.


The Hardenbergia genus is a member of the pea flower subfamily of the legume family and there are three species in Australia, growing in areas from Queensland to Tasmania. It is commonly known as Compton coral pea, native lilac vine, wild sarsaparilla and wild wisteria.

Blooms will start to emerge in winter and will continue to flower until early spring. Pea shaped flowers appear in mass clusters and are a vibrant rich purple, White or pink depending on variety chosen.
